Ni Un Muerto Mas! – No More Killings! Extractive Industries and Social Protest in Peru

Special Guest Lecture by Peruvian Poet and Human Rights Activist Rocio Silva Santisteban

Mason Hall, Room D3
February 19, 2013, 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

In the 18 months since president Ollanta Humala took office in Peru, some 24 people have been killed by security forces in the context of social protests, mostly over mining concessions. Why? The Latin American Studies program welcomes renowned Peruvian poet, literary critic and human rights activist Rocío Silva Santisteban to discuss the factors that have contributed to this tragic situation. Silva Santisteban, who teaches at the Antonio Ruiz de Montoya University, is currently the Executive Secretary of the Coordinadora Nacional de Derechos Humanos, a coalition of Peru’s major human rights organizations.

Sponsored by Latin American Studies, the Human Rights & Global Justice Working Group, Global Interdisciplinary Programs, and Women & Gender Studies.
